Paris, France · 2 September 2019 · Global Chefs Challenge Results: Who will compete at Worldchefs Congress & Expo 2020

The Global Chefs Challenge semi-finals concluded last month with Africa & Middle East delivering the resulting qualifying teams. With regional selection in Europe, the Americas, the Pacific, and Africa & Middle East now complete, the best talent in culinary competition are set to compete at the final, joining top performers from the 2018 Culinary World Cup and wild card competitors from final’s host country, Russia.

The Global Chefs Challenge final will be held during Worldchefs Congress & Expo in St. Petersburg Russia, July 28-31, 2020. With the backdrop of this prestigious biennial event, the anticipated Global Chefs Challenge final sees the best chefs from around the planet go head to head. After many months of competition and preparation, the world’s most promising chefs will experience four days of intense competition and give their very best as they fight to win the prized trophy and title of Worlds Best Chef.

Results from the Global Chefs Challenge Africa & Middle East Regional Semi-Final

Paris, France · 23 August 2019: Results from the Global Chefs Challenge Africa & Middle East Regional Semi-Finals

The Africa & Middle East Regional Semi-Finals for the Global Chefs Challenge were held in Pretoria, South Africa, 31 July – 1 August. Organized by South African Chefs Association (SACA) and Worldchefs, the competition was held in conjunction with INFOCHEF 2019 in Times Square.

Selected through champion performance at national competitions, participating teams representing Egypt, Qatar, United Arab Emirates and South Africa competed to show their mastery in the culinary arts through three competition categories: Global Chefs Challenge, Global Pastry Chefs Challenge, and Global Young Chefs Challenge – Hans Bueschkens Trophy.

The teams were made up of chefs from various hotels and restaurants from each country representing their national chefs association. Competitors are listed below:

Qatar

  • Global Chefs: Chef Kommalage Asanka Sanjeewa 
  • Pastry Chefs: Chef Alkesh Bhandari
  • Young Chefs: Chef Oussama ben Hassen

United Arab Emirates

  • Global Chefs: Chef Mario Coelho

All teams did an outstanding job and made judging extremely hard and the end result being very close with the winner and second place being .4 of a point between them. This competition was held at the highest level. Winners will now go through to the final to compete against the best in the world at Worldchefs Congress & Expo 2020 in St Petersburg, Russia.

  • Winner: South Africa, Chef Dion Vengatass 
  • 1st runner up: United Arab Emirates, Chefs Mario Coelho and Tharindu Lakshan
  • 2nd runner up: Qatar, Chefs Kommalage Asanka Sanjeewa and El Mehdi Merdi

Global Pastry Chefs Challenge

  • Winner: South Africa, Chef Arno Ralph
  • 1st runner up: Egypt, Chef Sedhom Hamed
  • 2nd runner up: Qatar, Chef Alkesh Bhandari

Global Young Chefs Challenge – Hans Bueschkens Trophy

  • Winner: South Africa, Chef Armin Maritz
  • 1st runner up: Egypt, Chef Kareem Atef
  • 2nd runner up: United Arab Emirates, Chef Leon Rozario

Team South Africa along with the wildcard competitor from the UAE in pastry will now represent the region at the Final in July 2020 in St Petersburg.

The judges of the competition came from each country and South Africa, led by head judge and seasoned competitor Garth Schnier, Hossam Soliman – President of Egypt Chefs Association, Andy Cuthbert – Continental Director based in UAE, Sanet Prinsloo – former association president from Namibia, and Nadine Demmier and Stuart McClarty of South Africa. We thank the judges for their excellent work.

Continental Director Andy Cuthbert remarked, “the organization and location of the competition was excellent and SACA did an outstanding job in organizing the event flawlessly. President James Khoza and competition organizer Elsu Gericke are to be congratulated for an outstanding competition.”

Grateful thanks also goes several culinary schools including Capsicum, Chef MLK School of Cooking, Prue Leith, and HTA for their exemplary student volunteers and logistical support.

HORECA Lebanon, the annual meeting place for the hospitality and foodservice industries, closed its doors on April 5, 2019, rounding off a spectacular four days at Beirut’s Seaside Arena. Spotlighting the latest innovations and trends in the hospitality and foodservice industries, the event was hailed a resounding success, bringing together more than 350 exhibitors from Lebanon and countries including Bulgaria, Cyprus, France, Greece, Indonesia, Italy, KSA, Kuwait, Poland, Spain, Sri Lanka, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey, UAE and USA.

“For a Better Industry” was this year’s theme, defining the objective of HORECA Lebanon: to be a regional business meeting place where the future of the hospitality and foodservice sectors in Lebanon and the Middle East is shaped.

Throughout the course of the four-day trade exhibition, more than 70 international culinary, beverage and hospitality experts shared their expertise at 20 daily events, competitions and workshops, which showcased the talents of over 900 participants. The jam-packed program included the Hospitality Salon Culinaire, Junior Chef Competition, Art of Service Competition, Coupe du Monde de la Pâtisserie, Lebanese Bartenders Competition, Mocktail Competition, Lebanese Barista Competition, Latte Art Competition, Atelier Gourmand, Al Matbakh, Wine Lab, Arak Lab, Annual Hospitality Forum, National Extra Virgin Olive Oil Contest and the Bed Making Competition. 

Over 16,000 trade professionals attended HORECA Lebanon to discover the newest products. 


ABOUT HOSPITALITY SALON CULINAIRE

Endorsed by the World Association of Chefs’ Societies and supported by the Academie Nationale de cuisine, the 20th edition of the Hospitality Salon Culinaire was very successful. 300 chefs participated in the various competitions focusing on exceptional talents. Four Seasons Hotel Beirut & Fulcrum-LBACC received the Golden Award for winning the most gold medals for three days of intense competition.

Congratulations to Participants of the 11th International Culinary Competition of Southern Europe in Thessaloniki, Greece

Paris, France · 11 March 2019: Congratulations to Participants of the 11th International Culinary Competition of Southern Europe in Thessaloniki, Greece

After four days of cooking, tasting and judging, the winners of the Best Chef of the Year, Student of the Year, Team of the Year and Best School of the Year were announced on Monday, in a festive atmosphere, at the closing ceremony of the 11th International Culinary Competition of Southern Europe.

The Competition took place within the 28th International Exhibition for Food, Beverages, Machinery Equipment and Packaging, Detrop, from March 1 to March 4, 2019, at Pavillion 16 of Thessaloniki International Exhibition and Conrgress Centre, HELEXPO.

This year there were 540 participations of distinguished Chefs and students (a record number for the history of the Competition) from 22 countries, that competed in 30 categories and were evaluated by 6 Greek and 17 international Judges.

The Best School of the Year Trophy was awarded to INTERCOLLEGE CULINARY ARTS from Cyprus, the Best Chef of the Year Trophy to Mr. Kaloyan Kalev from Bulgaria, the Best Student Chef of the Year Trophy to Alexis Callas from Cyprus, the Student Pastry Chef of the Year Trophy to Michalis Sarafidis from Greece and the Team Grand Prix to the team from Iceland.

“With participations from Serbia, Taiwan, Iceland, Cyprus, Turkey, Ukraine and many other countries, we are glad to see the Competition’s development through the years and its international recognition. Some of the best Chefs from around the world are gathered in order to share experience and knowledge”, mentioned the president of the Organizing Committee, Mr. Gkotsis.

The Organizer of the Competition, The Chefs Association of Northern Greece, would like to congratulate the participants that managed to impress the demanding Judging Committee with their skills and creativity, but also for their high standards and excellent attitude during the competition.

Europe Regional Semi-Finals for the Global Chefs Challenge were held in Rimini, Italy, 16-19 February 2019. Selected through champion performance at national competitions throughout Europe, participating teams representing Europe South, Central, and North competed to show their mastery in the culinary arts through three competition categories: Global Chefs Challenge, Global Pastry Chefs Challenge, and Global Young Chefs Challenge – Hans Bueschkens Trophy.

Semi-Finals for the Global Chef Challenge begin this week in Rimini, Italy, 16-19 February 2019. Selected through top performance at national competitions throughout Europe, participating teams represent Europe North, Central, and South. Organized by Federazione Italiana Cuochi – FIC, the competition is in conjunction with Campionati della Cucina Italiana 2019.

Over the course of four days, competitors meet to show their mastery in the culinary arts through three competition categories: Global Chefs Challenge, Global Pastry Chefs Challenge, and Global Young Chefs Challenge – Hans Bueschkens Trophy. Competitors will be vying for a coveted opportunity to compete at the Global Chef Challenge Finals during the 2020 Worldchefs Congress in St. Petersburg, Russia, July 28-31, 2020.

Winning teams advance to the Finals to compete head to head against the Culinary World Cup qualifying teams.

14 July 2018 – After two years of exciting national and
Continental selections, the finals of the Global Young Chefs Challenge, Global
Chefs Challenge and the Global Pastry Chefs Challenge took place at the
Worldchefs Congress & Expo from

12 – 14 July at the Kuala Lumpur
Convention Centre in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.




The winners who emerged from the days of intense competition are:
Jimmi Eriksson from Sweden (Global
Chefs Challenge),
Niall Larjala from
Finland, (Global Young Chefs Challenge),and
Lim Wei Hrn from Singapore (Global Pastry Chefs Challenge).

 

The format

 

The Global
Chefs Challenge
featured 18 countries, where competitors prepared a
four-course menu, each with 12 portions over two sessions.  Invited guests were invited to taste the
dishes at the competition arena, which was transformed into a pop-up
restaurant.

 

At the Global Young Chefs Challenge, ten teams from all over the world each prepared a 3-course menu, each
with 4 servings.

 

At the Global Pastry Chefs
Challenge,
10 top patissiers
created a chocolate centerpiece with a minimum height of 60cm
6 portions of plated desserts based on a
summer theme and a gateau of their choice.

 

Says chief judge, Gert Klotze, “The
competitors were put through a very stringent test. They had to be creative and
use the stipulated range of top quality ingredients provided by our
sponsors.  It was a good test of the
culinary techniques, discipline and also creativity. The standards were all
very high, and for each Global Chefs Challenge, we can see competitors
continually pushing themselves and exploring new boundaries.”



Thomas Gugler, President of Worldchefs adds, “The Global Chefs Challenges have
always been an integral part of the Congress. It is a platform Worldchefs have
developed to continually encourage and educate chefs to achieve perfection on
the plate. The response to the competition and the standards exhibited has
really been outstanding.”
