Since its creation by the highly-respected chef Dr. Bill Gallagher, Worldchefs (the apex body of the chefs associations across the globe) has committed to using October 20, 2018 as International Chefs Day – to celebrate the culinary profession, always remembering the vital influence of Chefs as role models.

Its theme this year “Healthy Foods for Growing Up” has drawn chefs from around the globe hosting healthy eating workshops for children in their local communities.

#HealthyFoodsforGrowingUp has been a running theme of outreach initiatives adopted by Curry Singh Kitchens and Cuisine Digest magazine for Chefs in Gurugram, India since September 2018 along with Feeding India, an organisation supporting the cause of #ZeroHunger as part of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

The three players from the food sector have come together to educate underprivileged children on healthy eating through workshops conducted in shelter homes of Gurugram city. The workshop includes a demonstration by Chef Reetika Gill of Curry Singh Kitchens on the value of consuming sustainable, seasonal and local fruits and vegetables, followed by distribution of one such seasonal fruit sourced locally to each young participant. Cuisine Digest magazine for Chefs – a knowledge initiative by IFCA President Chef Manjit Singh Gill (Culinary Director, Cuisine Digest) and WCWB Ambassador Chef Sudhir Sibal (Editor, Cuisine Digest) – has taken the cause of sustainable food to the chef community worldwide.

Ankit Kawatra’s (Forbes Under 30) Feeding India tries to solve the country’s hunger problem by providing free meals through volunteers and donation centres. It operates a smartphone app where restaurants and individuals can sign up to donate food, which are then collected and distributed to people in need. The non-profit organization has a network of more than 4,500 volunteers, who run regular feeding programs in more than 45 Indian cities and has served more than 4.8 million meals so far.

In this initiative for healthy foods for growing up, they are supported by leading Chefs of the country.

Pupils put on a 'soup-er' show as part of International Chefs Day

Broccoli never tasted so good according to a group of Birmingham schoolchildren who took over one of the UCB kitchens in Summer Row to mark International Chefs Day.

Working with chef lecturer Mathew Shropshall, the Year 10 children from St John Wall Catholic School, in Handsworth, chopped, boiled and blitzed their way to making a delicious broccoli soup in line with this year’s theme, Healthy Foods for Growing Up.

It was the first time they had been in a professional kitchen but that didn’t stop them from whizzing up their ‘soup-er’ tasty broth and impressing Matthew who said it was all part of inspiring a new generation of chefs keen on taking up the profession.

“Bearing in mind that the children hadn’t even been in a school kitchen let alone anything like we have here at UCB, I thought they were wonderful,” he said.

“It’s great that we can take part in International Chefs Day, organized by the World Association of Chefs Societies, because it is the perfect way to show how fun it can be to make healthy things to eat and hopefully, it will help inspire a few of them to take up cookery as a career.”

Over the past few years, Worldchefs has partnered with  Nestlé Professional to teach kids around the globe about the importance of healthy eating by hosting such fun workshops.

St John Wall Catholic School teacher Debby Williamson, who accompanied the group to UCB, said the event would help the children with their course in hospitality and catering.

She said: “It’s a great opportunity for them to visit a kitchen like this. They will be learning about nutrition and different methods of cooking so this is just perfect especially as it is the first time they have done any practical work.”

Akeel Higgins was one of those who took part in the session and while he said the broccoli soup was good, he added that he’d had better.

During International Chefs Day, chefs in Ghana call for collaboration to achieve zero hunger by 2030

Chefs In Ghana Call For Stakeholder Collaborations Towards Achieving Zero Hunger By 2030 On International Chefs Day

Since its creation by late Chef Dr. Bill Gallagher in 2004, chefs across the world have committed to using International Chefs Day to celebrate their noble profession, always remembering that it is their duty to pass on knowledge and culinary skills to the next generation with a sense of pride and commitment to the future.

Nestlé Ghana partnered with Ghana Education Service and chefs from the Chefs Association of Ghana to organize a Nestlé for Healthier Kids community cooking session on Friday 19th October, with children from the Asafo Agona East District Assembly Basic School in Central region.

Under the theme “Healthy Foods for Growing Up”, the children were grouped based on their career aspirations and guided by chefs to prepare recipes with local, familiar ingredients.

Speaking to the media, founder of Food for All Africa and member of the Chefs Association of Ghana, Chef Elijah Amoo Addo called on stakeholders within Ghana’s food supply chain to collaborate with chefs in accelerating Ghana’s effort towards attaining Zero Hunger targets by 2030.

“As chefs we believe in a better future for food. A future where ingredients are grown with respect for the environment, where no good food goes to waste and where everyone, everywhere enjoys the nutritious meals they need to grow and thrive. Chefs bridge the gap between the farm and the fork – transforming raw ingredients into delicious, nutritious meals. In doing so, we influence what our farmers grow, what we put on our plates and how we think and talk about food.

We play a critical role in ensuring Ghana meets the targets of the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2, 3 and 12, as such there is the need for greater collaborations with stakeholders. Healthy dietary and lifestyle patterns from an early age could positively impact on peoples nutrition and health throughout their adult lives, and enhance the increase in productivity of individuals and their nation.”

He concluded by commending Nestlé Ghana for leading the cause through their non-branded Nestlé for Healthier Kids project and their commitment in fulfilling their 2030 global ambition to help 50 million children lead healthier lives.

International Chefs Day came to Tokyo

All Japan Chefs Association (AJCA) celebrated
the International Chefs Day 2018 on 2nd October 2018 with” the theme
of Healthy Foods for Growing up” together with 54 sixth grade students of
Fujimi Elementary School in Tokyo and 12 chefs of AJCA members
including President Toshi and Vice
President Kihachi Kumagai.

After the cooking demonstration done by
Chef Kumagai, children washed hands first and started to cook 3 dishes which
were Cold Japanese Pear Soup, Japanese Traditional Pork Cutlet Sandwich and Smoked
Crabmeat and Healthy Vegetables Salad California Style.

Children dressed in chef’s hat and apron,
presented by Nesle Professional, were preparing delicious foods under chef’s
professional instruction. They were interested in how to use knife safely, to
sieve soup properly and so on. Chefs were happy to see that they worked hard, actively
and eagerly more than they expected.

Dishes were completed on schedule, then
they enjoyed their foods at the table covered with white table cloth in good
eating manner together with chefs.

It was a very exciting and fun for not only
children but also for chefs.
