WORLDCHEFS YOUNG CHEFS CLUB

All National Associations within Worldchefs have a commitment to develop young chefs; this
development is written into their constitutions and by laws and this is also part of the larger mission of Worldchefs as an organization.

We encourage all National Association to form a Young Chefs Club, so as to provide their
Young Chefs opportunities for growth through network, education and skills development.

Steps to form a YCC

Pre-formation

APPLICATION PROCESS

Be inspired of the benefits a Young Chefs Club would bring to your association and the young chefs in your country. Get approval by your Worldchefs’ National Association in setting up one.

Speak with culinary schools and gather their support to allow their students to join as members of the club. Gather a group of culinary instructors from the various schools to be advisors and support the club. They can work as liaision officers between the club and your members in the schools to disseminate news and recruit members. 

Setting up your Committee

Gather a group of young chefs/ students from various culinary schools to form a committee. You may select them from recommendations from their teachers/chefs, have them submit their CVs and through an interview.

Organise your first committee meeting. Decide the roles and responsibilities for the committee and allocate them to the committee members. Let them know what is expected of them. Design and create namecards for the committee. It will be useful for them when they are speaking to members, chefs, potential sponsors and the press.

Discuss and decide on your Club’s name. Set your club’s direction by deciding its Mission Statement and Vision.

Discuss how the club would be run. Will there be a membership fee? How will the members benefit in return? How many members would be a good number to maintain? How would your club and Chef Association relationship be like? Would there be certain activities which are together? Would the finances come under the Chef Association? How would you like your Chef Association to support your Club

Recruitment

Create a Membership Application Form or use the one from your Chef Association. Start a recruitment drive in the schools to gather members. Ask the schools to give you a time slot to present to the students. You may create a powerpoint presentation, posters, or even invite a renown Chef to come and lend his support.

Inform your Chefs Association that your Club is formed, and have them to inform Worldchefs. Ask Worldchefs for the Young Chefs Club Information for Registration form, to be completed and sent back to the Worldchefs Young Chefs Development Team.

Create an online presence and engage your members by starting a Facebook page for your club. You may also create a website, twitter account…

Operations

APPLICATION PROCESS

Plan events and activites for the members (Educational fieldtrips, Townhall meetings, product knowledge workshops , competitions etc). It will be good to do a forecast of the activities for the year and work on them.

Seek companies to sponsor your club.
Organise your very own young chefs competition.
Actively communitcate with your members.
Actively communicate with Worldchefs Young Chefs Development Team, your Chefs Association and other Young Chefs Clubs in your region.

Starting a Junior Culinary Team to train and represent your chefs association and club in overseas competitions

The Young Chefs Development Committee operate under the same mission as the main Worldchefs body, however our focus is on youth, their interests, and their development. Young chefs are much earlier in their careers. They are eager for new experiences and learning opportunities. They are excited about the breadth of the industry and are inspired by mentors and more senior chefs. Young chefs are developing their style and planning their futures. Sometimes they need more support and at times they do not know what they do not know.

Young chefs are generally 25 years of age or younger. For official registration such as for the Worldchefs Congress and Worldchefs Competitions, we ask that participants respect the age limit, however we understand that transitioning to a senior chef can be a developmental process. Some start their careers later in life and in that sense are junior chefs or still apprentices and we support that type of lifelong learning just the same.

The Bill Gallagher Young Chefs Forum is a unique part of Worldchefs Congress. In it, we welcome the young chefs of the world to come together for a congress approach tailored to young chefs. Dr. Billy Gallagher was a well-respected South African chef. Sadly, he passed away in his sleep in 2016 after a fulfilling and accomplished life, even having survived being shot during a carjacking. Young Chefs Clubs (YCC) depend on you and your peers! The clubs are what you make of them. Some of the well-established clubs have active leadership that meets and is in regular communication. Amongst themselves, they organize their own excursions, events, fundraisers, tastings, training sessions, guest speakers, friendly competitions, and more. Many of them simply enjoy learning about the culinary industry and having new experiences together. Young chefs naturally develop skills beyond culinary skills. They experience networking, public speaking, pushing their limits, and organizational skills too.

That’s great that you want to start your own young chefs club! In short:

  1. Check to see if there is a National Association in your country: (link to map and database of existing national organizations)
  2. If so, reach out to the leadership team and express your interest. They might be able to support you directly. If not, consider “piggy-backing” off a neighboring country’s membership depending where you are around the world.
  3. Gather peers and classmates who would form a young board of directors or committee with you. You may need to put a call out to fill more active roles.
  4. Inform your National Association that you would like to form a young chefs club and have them pass on a registration form from Worldchefs. (Registration Form)
  5. Plan and complete organizational framework for being accountable and fair. Look for other resources such as local culinary schools or libraries. See an example here: (link to Singapore YCC Constitution)
  6. Continue organizing meetings and events. Monitor other Worldchefs activities elsewhere and consider how you can keep growing.

Sometimes, it is easy and interesting to see what other Young Chefs Clubs are doing. The best support is seeing and learning from other young chefs. Look into what other clubs are doing and take part in online events and webinars. Keep in mind that senior members and mentors can be an excellent source for motivation and inspiration.

Young Chefs Clubs must be maintained under the national membership. National Associations will require their own membership, some of which have a cost for students or young chefs. Following national guidelines is highly encouraged so all participants can be aligned and a standard is maintained. Please look into your national guidelines.

Your country’s national association may have a small fee, targeted for apprentices and young chefs who are just getting their career started. Each country has differing requirements.

How do I join Worldchefs Young Chefs Club.

  • The term “Worldchefs Young Chefs Club(s)” shouldn’t be represented as a single Young Chefs Club, but by a network of Young Chef Clubs that is connected through Worldchefs. As a member of Young Chefs Club, under a Worldchef’s National Association, you are automatically a part of Worldchefs.
